FINA Hands Down Suspensions

FINA PRESS RELEASE 09/08/99
The FINA (Federation Internationale de Natation Amateur) DOPING PANEL held a hearing today, August 9, 1999 on the positive doping cases and decided the following:

1. The swimmer Wang Wei (CHN) tested positive for clenbuterol (Beta-2 agonists) has been suspended for three (3) years commencing April 13, 2000.

2. The swimmer Xiong Guoming (CHN) tested positive for clenbuterol (Beta-2 agonists) has been suspended for three (3) years commencing August 9, 1999.

Both tests were taken as part of FINA Out of Competition Doping Control Program on March 8th, 1999. For both swimmers this is the second doping offence committed under the FINA Rules. Wand Wei was tested positve for Triamterene in FINA Out of Competition doping control tests on January 8th, 1998 and suspended for 2 years. Xiong Guoming tested positve for dihydrotestosterone during the 12th Asian Games on October 3, 1994 and was suspended for 2 years.

The swimmers shall be disqualified from all competitions they took part in the time since March 8, 1999.

An appeal may be submitted against these decisions at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne (SUI) within one (1) month after receipt of these decisions (FINA Rule C 10.8.3).

FINA PRESS RELEASE 08/08/99
1. The diver Yulia PAKHALINA (RUS) tested positive for caffeine during the 5th Diving Grand Prix event in Juarez City, (MEX) on May 14th, 1999 and has been suspended for two (2) months commencing August 8, 1999.

2. The long distance swimmer David MECA MEDINA (ESP) tested positive for nandrolone during the FINA Marathon World Cup in Salvador de Bahia, (BRA) on January 31, 1999 and has been suspended for a period of four (4) years commencing August 8, 1999.

3. The long distance swimmer Igor MAJCEN (SLO) tested positive for nandrolone during the FINA Marathon World Cup in Salvador de Bahia, (BRA) on January 31, 1999 and has been suspended for a period of four (4) years commencing August 8, 1999.

4. The diver Tracy BONNER (USA) tested positive for dextroamphetamine during the FINA Diving Grand Prix event in Montreal, (CAN) on May 2, 1999 and has been suspended for one (1) year commencing August 8, 1999. In case the diver is granted the use of this substance in the future the suspension shall be six (6) months in accordance with FINA Rule DC 3.5 (in effect since June 1, 1999).
