THE FIRST WORLD SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIP
In January 1858, Captain Kenney staged the first First "World Championship" at St. Kilda Baths in Melbourne, Australia. It consisted of a race over 100 yards in which Charles Steedman, of London, England, was beaten by John Bennett of Sydney.
