Westminster Sweeps Presidents' Athletic Conference
Feb 14, 2006

The Westminster College men's & women's swimming teams each captured team championships tonight at the conclusion of the three-day Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship, hosted by Grove City College in Grove City, Pa.

The team titles marked the third PAC championship in the past four years for both teams, as the Titans were PAC Champions in 2003 and 2005, while the Lady Titans captured the PAC crown in 2003 and 2004.

The Titan men finished in first place with 936 points, narrowly ahead of the host Wolverines (906) followed by Washington & Jefferson (624) and Bethany (179). The Lady Titans posted 817 points, ahead of defending league champion Washington & Jefferson (727), Grove City (588) and Bethany (150). For his efforts, veteran Westminster head coach Rob Klamut earned 2006 PAC Men's & Women's Swimming Coach of the Year honors. The Westminster men captured four events and broke a pair of school records on the final day of competition, led by freshman Chris Lehberger (New Wilmington/Wilmington Area H.S.), who captured the 200 breaststroke in a school-record time of 2:07.73. Other Titan winners included junior Pat Smith (South Park/South Park H.S.) in the 200 backstroke (1:56.14); freshman Zac Gebhardt (Monroeville/Gateway H.S.) in the 1650 freestyle (16:35.12); and freshman Conor Simpson (Monroeville/Gateway H.S.) in the 200 butterfly (1:56.19). In addition, junior Ryan Trunk (Brookline, MA/Cheshire Academy H.S.) set a new school-record in the 100 freestyle with a second-place time of 45.41.

The Lady Titans posted a pair of first place finishes. Junior Britt Thomas (Bethel Park/Bethel Park H.S.) touched first in the 1650 freestyle (18:15.43) , while sophomore Steph Peters (Finleyville/Peters Township H.S.) captured the 100 freestyle (53.57).

Both Westminster swim teams return to the pool next Saturday (Feb. 18) at the Case Western Reserve University Veale Classic in Cleveland. It will be the final opportunity for Titan swimmers looking to qualify for the NCAA Division III National Swimming & Diving Championships.
