Britain has added two swimmers - Simon Burnett and Adam Brown - to its Olympic team roster. Neither qualified by right but benefit from the will to build relay strength in the lead-up to London 2012. They will compete in the 4x100m freestyle.

Burnett suffered a disappointing collapse in form and failed to qualify in three times of asking in the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle. He now gets a second chance but is out of Olympic contention as far as his individual promise goes. Neither of the Britain berths for the solo 100m in Beijing has been filled and although discretion exists, selection rules would have to be broken to place Burnett on the blocks in the individual event in China. If Burnett is firing by then, it will doubtless be tempting to find loopholes.

Brown, coached by Nick Juba in Britain and Chris Nesbit out on the Gold Coast in Australia where he has been based at The Southport School, is an 18-year-old talent with a big journey ahead of him.

He said: 'I am over the moon to have been selected for the Olympic team, it is a dream come true. Going into the British Championships I knew I had a chance to make it but thought it was an outside chance. It will be an amazing experience, especially as I look to prepare for 2012.'

Michael Scott, Britain's Performance Director, said: 'The focus of British Swimming over recent years has been on relays. Therefore it's been critical that we provide opportunities for our swimmers to compete in relays at the highest level such as the Olympic Games. 'This relay along with the five other relays competed at last years world championships and our aim is to field competitive relays in Beijing so that we continue to develop our world rankings in readiness for 2012.'
