We have last nights results from the swimming at the Pan Am Games in Winnipeg. They can be found in our meet results area.

Kelly Stefanyshyn, formerly of Winnipeg picked up a gold medal by winning the 100m backstroke in a time of 1:02.14. In a close second an third were Denali Knapp and Beth Botsford of the USA who finished with times of 1:02.45 & 1:02.48 respectively.

Canada's womens 4x100freestyle relay team of Jessica Deglau, Marianne Limpert, Sarah Evanetz and Laura Nicholls beat the US to win the gold medal with a time of 3:45.07. This was actually the third gold medal of the competition for both Deglau and Nicholls.

In the womens 400 freestyle Kaitlin Sandeno of the US won the event with a time of 4:10.74. Janelle Atkinson representing Jamaica was third in 4:10.83 while Joanne Malar of Canada picked up the bronze with a time of 4:12.64.

Fernando Scherer of Brazil won the mens 100 freestyle with a Pan Am Games record time of 49.19. He bettered the previous mark of 49.31 which was held by his teammate Gustavo Borges who finished third in the race with a time of 50.10. Jose Meolans of Argentina was second with a time of 49.94. Scott Tucker of the US was fourth in a time of 50.15 while Canadian Yannick Lupien finished 8th with a time of 50.73.

Leonardo Costa of Brazil was the winner of the mens 200 backstroke with a time of 1:59.33. Americans Aaron Peirsol 1:59.77 and Dan Shevchik 2:00.27 finished second and third. Canadians Dustin Hersee 2:01.30 and Mark Versfeld 2:03.52 finished fourth and fifth.

In Other News
Fina has ratified Penny Heyns World Record in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. They also ratified Inge DeBruijn's 50 fly record from the Dutch Nationals and Sandra Volker's 50 backstroke record from Monte Carlo. Both Volker's and DeBruijn's records were beaten in Istanbul, Turkey at the recent European Champiosnhips but these newer times must be ratified first.

Australian swimmer Scott Goodman the Olympic bronze medalist in the 200m fly is pulling out of the upcoming Pan Pacific Championships due to recent illness, which in his words "had reduced his fitness level and affected his health." This withdrawl brings the Australian team down to 49 swimmers.
