WENDEN WINS OLYMPIC 100, WITHSTANDS WALSH'S WITHERING CHALLENGE
In Mexico City, October 19th, 1968, it looked as if the Olympic 100 men's freestyle final was a forgone battle between U.S. swimmers, Mark Spitz, Ken Walsh and Zac Zorn.

But Michael Wendon, the high-revving Australian, had ideas of his own when he put in a spectacular finish to win the gold, three feet in front of Walsh in a new world mark of 52.2 seconds. Mark Spitz, the pre-meet favourite was third, while Zac Zorn, who seemed unbeatable as he turned first at the 50, a full body-length ahead, faded fast to finish last.
