Four Added to Beijing List at RSA Trials

Jean Basson, Cameron van der Burgh, Melissa Corfe and Wendy Trott swam inside the standard required of them in Durban

At South African trials in Durban, Jean Basson, Cameron van der Burgh, Melissa Corfe and Wendy Trott added their names to the shortlist for Beijing 2008 at the Kings Park Aquatic Centre.

Corfe and Trott battled to best times of 4:08.70 and 4:08.88 respectively, well inside Corfe's previous record of 4:11.66. Basson, based in the US, won the men's equivalent in 3: 49.68, 0.78sec inside the mark he needed. Van der Burgh clocked 1:01.25 in the 100 metres breaststroke semi-finals.

Lize-Mari Retief broke the African 50m freestyle record that had stood to Lauren Roets at 25.64 with a 25.50. She needed a 25.43 for Beijing There was also a national record of 1:58.73 in the semi-finals of the 200 metres butterfly, Sebastien Rousseau inside his previous best of 1:59.84.
