The first evening of finals at the German Olympic trials in Berlin produced four swims inside qualification standard:

Daniela Samulski (SG Bayer Wuppertal, Uerdingen, Dormagen) set a national record of 58.63 in the 100m butterfly, just 0.12sec off her best and previous German mark from 2006.

Paul Biedermann (SV Halle/Saale), fresh from winning the European 200m crown - and taking down 24-year-old German record that had stood to Michael 'the Albatross' Gross, star of the 1984 Olympic Games - won the 400m freestyle in 3:47.69, drawing Christian Kubusch (SC Magdeburg) with him inside target, on 3:47.96. Their next target: the 3:46.95 at which Uwe Dassler won the Olympic crown for the GDR in Seoul, 1988, before the fall of the Berlin Wall and the acceptance by the DSV (German federation for east and west after reunification) of all GDR records, tainted as they were, as their own. Dassler's time was a world record at the time.

Also booking her ticket to Beijing was Nicole Hetzer (SV Wacker Burghausen) in 4:43.49 in the 400m medley.

In other races that produced no qualifiers, Johannes Neumann fell 0.13sec shy of the German 100m breaststroke record held by Jens Kruppa at 1:01.19. Kruppa is out of action after having had surgery for a groin injury. Yannick Lebherz clocked 4:21.11 in the 400m medley.
