World Record Bull Run: 45 L/C; 22 S/C And Counting
2008-08-13
Craig Lord
45 world l/c records and 22 world s/c records have fallen since Feb 16. Since 1980, the record for numbers of world long-course records set in one year is 33, in 2000, the year in which the full bodysuit was launched granted license by FINA

No fewer than 45 world long-course records have fallen so far this year - and 22 world short-course records, February 16 to July 4. That's 67 global standards. Since 1980, the record for numbers of world long-course records set in one year is 33, in 2000, the year in which the full bodysuit was launched granted license by FINA. If we count long-course alone, we are now just 16 records shy of matching 1976, when goggles and Oral Turinabol were at play for the first time in the pool at an Olympic Games. Montreal witnessed 29 world records (18 for men; 11 for women). 2008 is now the biggest Olympic year in history barring 1976.

World record counts in recent Olympic years:

  • 2008: 45 so far
  • 2004: 17
  • 2000: 33
  • 1996: 5
  • 1992: 16
  • 1988: 24
  • 1984: 24
  • 1980: 24
  • 1976: 61
  • 1972: 53

Many of those records were set AT the Olympic Games NOT before. In 1976, for example, 29 world records fell in Montreal. In that sense, 2008 is already a record year for records.

The sport has now entered an era in which we must refer to pre-February 2008 and post-February 2008 times, such has been the impact of performance-enhancing bodysuits that have changed the nature of swimming. The bulk of the following efforts unfolded in a Speedo LZR Racer. Some in the pool continue to deny the impact of the suits. Of course, it is Olympic year, of course coaching gets better, of course there is natural progress, of course, of course, of course the sun rises and sets. But if anyone tells me that we have ever seen a time in the modern era where exceeding the time that won the Olympic title four years previously is good enough only for 8th place, I will call them a liar. If anyone tells me that it is normal for the time that won the world 100m freestyle title 17 months before these Games to now only be good enough for 17th place at the Olympic Games in Beijing, I will call them plain stupid. It isn't normal. It is extremely unusual. And we all know it.
