fghanistan and British Virgin Islands join FINA, taking to 197 the number of affiliated federations; Peru to host world junior champs; Rome 2009 programme agreed

From the third 2008 FINA Bureau meeting:

The stats from Beijing: 164 countries sent 1,043 swimmers, 50 marathon swimmers, 145 divers, 104 synchronised swimmers and 260 water polo players. 

The main decisions of the Bureau:

  • - Afghanistan and British Virgin Islands join FINA, taking to 197 the number of affiliated federations
  • - The world championships programme was approved for Rome, 2009
  • - The rules and calendar for the FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World 
  • Cup and FINA Open Water Swimming Grand Prix in 2009 were agreed
  • - The World junior champs will be held in Lima, Peru, in 2010
  • - An extraordinary congres is to be held to coincide with Rome 2009 to consider new rules for Masters 
  • - Pedro Adrega has been appointed Honorary Secretary of the FINA Press 
  • Commission
