Sprinter beats distance ironman for a place on the International Olympic Committee's athletes' commission

Alexander Popov has beaten Grant Hackett in an election for a place on the International Olympic Committee's athletes' commission. With one athlete per sport allowed, the Australian captain faced an uphill struggle again the popular former Sprint Tsar. Popov amassed 1,903 votes, almost 800 more than Hackett, on 1,131, to extend his term in office. The other three athletes elected were German Claudia Bokel (fencing), Korean Moon Dae-Sung (taekwondo) and Cuban Ruiz-Luaces Yumilka (volleyball).
