Kirsty Coventry (ZIM) finally found the alchemy to turn all that silver into gold, setting a world record of 2:05.24 to claim the 200m backstroke title and grant a trouble nation its first visit to the top of the Olympic podium.

Silver went to Margaret Hoelzer (USA) in 2:06.23 and bronze to Reiko Nakamura (JPN) in 2:07.13.
