Christian Sprenger and Leisel Jones continued to impress with solid mid-season southern-hemisphere 50m performances over 100m breaststroke at the Queensland champs at Chandler. Sprenger clocked a 1:00.72 win over Kris Gilchrist (GBR), on 1:02.47, and domestic rival Brenton Rickard, on 1:03.21. Young Brits, Daniel Sliwinski, 17, Douglas Scott, 16, went 1:04.41 and 1:03.95 and 1:04.21 and 1:04.30 respectively in heats and finals.

Jones was a class apart, on 1:06.73, to 1:08.66 and 1:08.88 for Sarah Katsoulis and Jade Edmistone but her former training partner Libby Lenton continued to struggle, losing the 50m freestyle to young Cate Campbell, 24.91 and Melanie Schlanger, 25.65, for a 25.69 third place.

Ashley Callus took the men;s sprint in 22.94, and Zhang Lin (CHN) was the distant winner of the 400m free, on 3:46.27, ahead of Robbie Renwick (GBR), on 3:51.91 in heats and 3:51.92 in final. Kylie Palmer, 17, took the 400m free in 4:09.63, and over 200m medley Leith Brodie got the touch over Gregor Tait (GBR), 2:01.81 to 2:02.45, and Stephanie Rice thumped the female field with a 2:13.81.

Britain is visiting the meet while training Down Under in a large group that includes talent for beyond Beijing. In the 16 years boys 200 free, for example, eight Brits raced, two making a final won by Daniel Smith, coached by Hackett mentor Denis Cotterell at Miami, on 1:50.74, ahead of Thomas Parris (GBR) on 1:53.63. Some of the boys are based permanently at the Southport School on the Gold Coast under the guidance of coach Chris Nesbit and team.
