Beijing test event underway with wins for Steffen and Biederman of Germany, Hoshi of Japan, while first medal goes to the Olympic host

The Good Luck Beijing China Open test event got underway at the Watercube in the Olympic city with many times slower in morning finals than evening heats. The real test of that will only come at the Games proper, especially given that most racing in China this week are doing so as a training exercise in the midst of heavy training.

Natsumi Hoshi (JPN) was good enough for gold over 200m butterfly ahead of Otylia Jedrzejczak (POL) with an in-training 2:10.18 that was 2sec up on evening heats.

Britta Steffen (GER) warmed up for the bigger moment with a 54.73 win over 100m freestyle, for which she is world record holder on 53.30.

Paul Biedermann (GER) took the 200m freestyle ahead of Pawel Korzeniowski (POL) 1:48.51 to 1:48.76, with Zhang Lin (CHN) on 1:48.92.

The 100m butterfly marked the first final won in the Olympic pool - and no surprise to find that the programme was organised to ensure that it went to the host nation, Shi Feng stopping the clock at 53.43 ahead of Wang Dong, 53.69, and Simao Morgado (POR), 54.29. The podium in August will test the 51sec mark.
