The man accused of having abused the Brazilian swimmer when she was nine says he will sue Maranhao's mother for having named him.

Eugênio Miranda's name is everywhere in the Brazilian media today after Joanna Maranhao's mother, Dr Teresinha Maranhão, named him as the man accused by the swimmer of having abused her when she was nine.

A physical education teacher, Miranda fled from the Colégio Santa Emília, in Olinda, this week after the accusation was made against him.

Miranda's lawyer, João Olympio Mendonça, addressed the media to confirm that legal action would now be taken against Dr Teresinha Maranhão, who was first to make the teacher's name public.

The swimmer, national medley record holder, confirmed the name of the man she accuses when she hit back: 'Bring him in front of me. I'd like to see him deny everything.' Speaking to the Brazilian media scrum at the Clube Português do Recife pool where the abuse was said to have taken place, she added: 'Stand him in from of the club director with me, and I'll give every detail of what he did to me.'
