Canadian teenager on form at regional s/c championships

Erica Morningstar, the teenager sprint star of the Maple squad, has been having a ball at the Canadian Western s/c Championships in Victoria.

She started out by becoming the first Canadian woman to crack 2:10 in a 200m medley, her 2:09.05 eclipsing the previous mark of 2:10.90 that had stood to Nancy Sweetnam since 1993. 'I just missed that record at a previous meet so I was hoping to go in the 2:10 range tonight. What made the difference tonight was my breaststroke. I've been working on it a little more. Even though I'm better known for my freestyle racing, I've always swam the IM races and I'm not surprised to do this well,' said Morningstar, who took the 50m freestyle in 25.17. 'It's great to get off to a great start like this in 2008,' she added. 'Everything I'm working on right now is towards the Olympic trials, with my main focus on the sprint freestyle events.'

She also clocked 31.45 to break the 31.50 national mark held since 1990 by Keltie Duggan in the 50m breaststroke, and in her specialist 50m and 100m freestyle took the titles in 25.17 and 53.48.
