Teenager shatters the Canadian short-course record over 60 laps with a 14:35.73 efforts at the Western Championships in Victoria

Ryan Cochrane of Victoria shattered the Canadian short-course record over 1,500m with a 14:35.73 efforts at the Western Championships in Victoria. The 19-year-old now sports fifth fastest time in the world this year after confining to history the 14:50.04 of Kurtis MacGillivary from 2002.

Cochrane's coach Randy Bennett said: 'It was an absolutely fantastic swim but truly this is the level he is at right now. I was expecting he would go around 14:43 ... I knew he was as good as he ever has been and he has the capacity to swim pretty fast while he is in hard training.'

Cochrane joined the long-course sub-15-minute club with a 14:59.02 when chasing world champion and European record holder Mateusz Sawrymowicz (POL) at the Paris Open last summer.

The meet in Victoria also saw Erica Morningstar win a fifth race, in 1:56.20 over 200m freestyle, just 0.06sec outside the Canadian record held since 2006 by Sophie Simard.
