And at the same meet in Western Cape, 12-year-old Jessica Liss clocks 1:11.66 in the 100m breaststroke

Jessica Pengelly clocked a 4:41.94 South African record in the 400m medley at the Samsung Swimming Grand Prix series at the University of the Western Cape today, while 12-year-old Jessica Liss won the 100m breaststroke in 1:11.66.

Pengelly's previous record was 4:43.76. Behind her were Kathryn Meaklim, in 4:45.41 and Liss, on 4:53.77. Not bad that, for a 12-year-old.

Pengelly, speaking through her federation and meet sponsors, said: 'I can't believe it, it's just mind-boggling. I never tapered for this gala as I have been focusing my training on posting an Olympic A qualifying time at the national championships in Durban in April and I cannot believe this time that I achieved here today.I took a rest from my training programme on Friday. Maybe it helped me today. I am just over the moon with the time, because it motivates me to go even faster when I plan on peaking in April.'

Liss clocked her breaststroke time after the medley and is aiming for a 2:28 Olympic qualifying time in the 200m tomorrow.
