More fast action at s/c nationals in Tokyo

The Japanese short-course nationals in Tokyo produced another set of nationals records on the final day of action.

Fresh from her 200m backstroke world record, Reiko Nakamura split 27.96 on her way to a national record of 58.08 in the 100m. Yuuko Nakanishi, also a world-record breaker on Saturday, in the 200m butterfly, was confined to third in the 100m, the national record falling to Yuka Katou in 57.12 off a 26.56 split. Next home were Akayo Doi, on 58.09, with Nakanishi stopping the clock at 58.31.

Ryo Takayasu split 23.62 on his way to a 50.55 national record in the 100m butterfly ahead of a youth record of 51.26 for Kazuki Ohbayashi. The 200m title was won by Ryuichi Shibata in 1:52.30.

Asami Kitagawa added to the list of records with a 1:06.18 win over 100m breaststroke, off a 31.66 split.

Elsehwere, Olympic champion Kosuke Kitajima won the 200m breaststroke in 2:05.03, to a youth record of 2:06.52 for Ryo Tateishi.

Japan might well press for a 4x100m backstroke relay at some stage (tricky takeovers, that one, but don't smirk too much - it has happened: Europe put on a 4x50m backstroke relay back in the 1990s, and it wasn't a pretty sight). Here's the result from the 100m back in Tokyo: Junichi Miyashita (52.36); Masafumi Yamaguchi (52.57); Takashi Nakano (52.96); Junya Koga (53.04).

Olympic champion Ai Shibata claimed the national 400m free crown in 4:05.70
